Give someone a philosopher
Three conversations with me, for someone who loves ideas, interesting questions and finding out about things they never knew existed.
People give books, concert tickets and evenings at a wine tasting. This is a few afternoons of philosophy., and a change from socks.

What this is
Three conversations in which I introduce you to philosophers you may never have heard of, and ones you’ve always meant to explore but never quite got round to. Ideas that change how ordinary things look. We start from what catches your interest; I bring the thinkers.
To book
Write to john@johnstoszkowski.com with this card’s number and we’ll find a time, any time in the year after the date stamped on the front.
If it isn’t for you
That’s fine. Tell me before we start and whoever gave you this gets their money back, or you can pass it on to someone who’d enjoy it.

What happens
I introduce them to philosophers they may never have heard of, and to ones they’ve always meant to explore but never quite got round to. Gaston Bachelard on why daydreaming matters. Eugen Fink on why adults take games so seriously. Nietzsche asking whether you’d live the same day again, over and over.
We start with whatever catches their interest. I bring philosophers, ideas and questions into the conversation, and we see where they take us. No syllabus and no homework, but not a chat about nothing in particular either: each conversation leaves them with someone new to think with, and they write who it was on the card.
Who it’s for
Someone with a pile of philosophy books by the bed. A parent who never stopped learning. The friend who asks the question everyone else at dinner skips. For a birthday, Christmas or just because: anyone who’d be delighted to find out that having a philosopher is even possible.
It isn’t a hint. Nobody’s being told to sort their life out. It’s closer to a concert ticket: something they’d love, that they’d never have thought to arrange for themselves. And you’re the introduction, which is half the gift.
The small print
- Price
- £450 for three conversations of about ninety minutes, online.
- When
- Whenever suits them, within a year of the date stamped on the card. They book directly with me. If something gets in the way and the year runs out, ask: I’d rather extend it than see it go to waste.
- If it isn’t for them
- That’s fine. If they’d rather not, tell me before the first conversation and I’ll refund you in full, or they can pass it on to someone who’d enjoy it.
- If they stop part way
- I’ll refund £150 for each conversation they don’t have.
- If you change your mind
- Tell me within 14 days of paying and I’ll refund you in full.
- Moving a conversation
- Easily done with a day’s notice.
- The card
- Numbered, with their name written on it and the date stamped, posted to you in an envelope. Or, if you’d rather (say they live abroad), emailed to you as a PDF to forward or print. It usually goes out within a few days of paying. For it to arrive before Christmas, ask by 16 December. After that, I’ll email you a note to give on the day and the card will follow in the post.
- Paying
- By card, securely through Stripe. Refunds go back to the same card.
Give it
You pay securely through Stripe, and add their name, who it’s from and a message if you like as you go. I write the name on the card, number it, stamp it and post it to you.
